In most parts of the world, psilocybin mushrooms are still illegal. However, thanks to the increase in medical and scientific research around the benefits, efficacy and safety of psilocybin, the regulatory landscape is evolving rapidly toward legalization as public and medical opinion shifts.
A number of cities in the United States, including Denver, Oakland, Ann Arbor, Santa Cruz, Cambridge, Somerville, Northampton, Easthampton, Detroit, Seattle, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. have decriminalized psychedelics. The state of Oregon has passed legislation to legalize psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy, which becomes legal in January 2023.
Several other cities and states, including New York State and Florida, are working on similar initiatives.
